Buchanan Renewables Fuel Group
Buchanan Renewables Fuel is committed to producing high quality and low moisture content woodchips from non-producing rubber plantations. The company has the capacity to produce 400,000 tonnes of woodchips annually. It works with individual plantation owners to help clear old, unproductive rubber trees and then replant the farm. On many farms, we are able to plant two trees for every one that has been harvested.
The harvested trees provide a high grade fuel for power production or excellent fiber for the board manufacturing markets. By the end of 2010, the woodchips will provide a green source of fuel for our power generation facility located just outside Monrovia.
The major benefit of the rejuvenation program, however, is that we are helping accelerate the rebirth of Liberia's rubber industry and putting many Liberians back to work or back in business, thus creating thousands of jobs.
In the 2nd and 3rd Quarter of 2009, Buchanan Renewables shipped over 45,000 tons of wood chips to Europe through the developing port of Buchanan. European consumers include large utility companies migrating to biomass feedstock, as well as Medium Density Fiberboard producers. The improvement of the port handling facilities will facilitate the shipment of 90,000 BDMT of woodchips already contracted for 2010.
